Adding Your First Products
Create products, upload photos, set prices, add variants, and publish your catalog.
Products are the heart of your storefront — everything your customers browse, add to their cart, and buy. This guide walks you through creating your first product from scratch.
Navigating to Products
In the admin sidebar, click Products. You’ll see the product list (empty when you’re just starting out). Click the Add Product button in the top right corner to create your first product.
The Product Form
Name and Description
Give your product a clear, descriptive name — the kind your customers would search for or say out loud. “Dahlia Bouquet” works. “Summer Arrangement #4” is confusing.
The description shows up on your product page. Tell customers what they’re getting: what flowers, how many stems, how long it will last, what occasions it’s perfect for. A few sentences goes a long way. You don’t need to write a novel — but “Beautiful flowers” won’t sell anything.
Pricing
Set your price per unit. If you have variants (like different stem counts or sizes), you’ll set pricing per variant instead. Keep it simple to start — you can always add complexity later.
Product Photos
Photos sell products. Upload at least one; two or three is better.
- In the product form, find the Photos section.
- Drag and drop image files onto the upload area, or click to browse your computer.
- Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP. Maximum 20MB per file.
- The first photo is your main listing image — it shows in shop grids and search results.
- Drag photos to reorder them after uploading.
Photography tips:
- Natural light is everything. Shoot near a window in the morning. Avoid harsh midday sun or indoor fluorescent lighting.
- Simple backgrounds. White, linen, wood — anything that doesn’t compete with the flowers.
- Fill the frame. Get close enough that the flowers are the star of the shot.
- Show scale. A hand holding a bouquet or a table arrangement with context helps customers understand what they’re actually getting.
You don’t need a fancy camera — a modern smartphone does the job beautifully when the light is right.
Availability and Stock
Under the Availability section, choose how stock works for this product:
- In stock — Always available. No quantity limit. Good for made-to-order items.
- Limited quantity — Enter a specific number. Picket automatically marks the product out of stock when it hits zero.
- By request — Customers can express interest, but it’s not a direct purchase. Good for custom orders or items you’re gauging demand for.
For seasonal items (like dahlias only available July–October), you can also set Available from / Available until dates.
Adding Variants
Variants let you offer the same product in different options, each with its own price. Common uses:
- Stem counts: 10 stems ($20), 25 stems ($45), 50 stems ($80)
- Sizes: Small, Medium, Large
- Types: Mixed Bouquet, Monochromatic, Dried
To add variants:
- Scroll to the Variants section.
- Click Add Variant.
- Give it a name and set its price.
- Repeat for each option.
When a product has variants, customers choose one at checkout. If you only have one size/option, you don’t need variants — just set the price at the top of the product form.
Categories
Assign your product to a category so it’s grouped logically on your shop page. If you haven’t created categories yet, you can leave this blank and come back to it. Categories are managed under Products > Categories.
Publishing vs. Draft
- Published — Your product is live and visible to customers.
- Draft — Hidden from customers. Use this while you’re still editing, or for products you’re not ready to launch yet.
When you click Save, you’ll see the Publish toggle at the top of the form. Make sure it’s turned on before saving if you want it live.
