Stripe Connect & How Payments Work
How Picket uses Stripe Connect so customer payments go directly to your bank account.
Understanding how money flows through Picket helps you plan your finances and troubleshoot any issues that come up.
How It Works
Picket uses Stripe Connect for customer payments. This means:
- A customer pays on your storefront using their credit or debit card.
- Stripe processes the payment instantly.
- The funds go directly into your Stripe account — not through Picket.
- Stripe transfers funds from your Stripe account to your bank on your payout schedule.
Picket never holds your money. We never touch your customer payments. The money flows directly from customer to you, with Stripe as the processor in the middle.
Your Stripe Dashboard
Once connected, you have full access to your own Stripe dashboard. You can log in anytime to:
- See all transactions in detail
- View your balance and upcoming payouts
- Download payment reports
- Manage your payout schedule and bank account
- Handle disputed charges (chargebacks)
- Issue refunds (you can also do this from Picket’s admin)
Stripe’s dashboard is comprehensive — if you ever need more detail than Picket’s order view provides, it’s all there.
Payout Schedule
Stripe’s default schedule: daily payouts with a 2-day delay. Money from Monday’s orders typically arrives in your bank account by Wednesday.
You can change this in your Stripe dashboard under Settings > Payouts:
- Daily (default) — Best cash flow
- Weekly — One payout per week on a day you choose
- Monthly — One payout per month on a specific date
Most farms prefer daily payouts for the best cash flow visibility.
Understanding the Fee Breakdown
Every order has two types of fees:
Stripe Processing Fee
2.9% + 30¢ per transaction
This is Stripe’s fee for processing credit and debit card payments. It applies to every order on every Picket plan, and Picket passes it through at cost with no markup.
For international cards, Stripe may add an additional 1.5%. For American Express cards, rates may be slightly higher.
Picket Service Fee (Free Plan Only)
2% of the order subtotal
This only applies on the Free plan. Standard and Pro plans have a 0% service fee.
Real Example: $75 Bouquet Order
| Free Plan | Standard Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer pays | $75.00 | $75.00 |
| Stripe fee (2.9% + $0.30) | −$2.48 | −$2.48 |
| Picket service fee | −$1.50 | −$0.00 |
| You receive | $71.02 | $72.52 |
At this order size, Standard saves you $1.50 per order. If you’re doing 50 orders/month at $75 average, that’s $75/month in service fees vs. $49/month for Standard — Standard is cheaper at that volume.
Refunds
Issue refunds from the order detail page in Picket’s admin (Orders > [Order] > Issue Refund).
When you issue a refund:
- Stripe returns the money to the customer’s original payment method.
- Processing typically takes 5–10 business days to appear on the customer’s card statement.
- Stripe’s processing fee is non-refundable. The 2.9% + 30¢ is kept by Stripe regardless of whether you refund.
- For partial refunds, Stripe calculates and keeps a proportional portion of the processing fee.
Chargebacks (Disputed Charges)
A chargeback happens when a customer disputes a charge with their bank. Stripe notifies you via email and in the Stripe dashboard. You have a window to respond with evidence (order confirmation, delivery proof, photos).
If you lose a chargeback:
- The order amount is returned to the customer.
- Stripe charges a $15 dispute fee.
- Your chargeback rate is tracked — high chargeback rates can affect your Stripe account standing.
For legitimate orders from real customers, chargebacks are rare. If you get one, gather your evidence (order details, customer communications, delivery confirmation) and submit it through the Stripe dashboard.
Troubleshooting
“Stripe account needs attention” — Log into your Stripe dashboard and look for a notification banner. This usually means Stripe needs additional verification information.
Payouts not arriving — Check your bank account number in Stripe’s dashboard. Also confirm your account is not restricted.
Customer says they were charged but order isn’t in Picket — Check your Stripe dashboard for the payment. Sometimes a network error between Stripe and Picket causes the order not to be recorded. Contact support if you see a payment in Stripe with no corresponding order in Picket.
